Depending on the model, the developer unit can be installed as a separately replaceable component (only in Xerox A3 printing systems, where the developer itself must also be replaced) or as part of a disposable toner cartridge. The developer unit in a disposable toner cartridge is therefore automatically replaced every time the toner is replaced. Some Xerox A4 printing systems feature permanent developer units; these are designed for the entire life of the printer and generally do not need to be replaced.
